About this course
Whatever your background, you'll find that this course will challenge you to see art history in new ways; each session takes a fresh and innovative approach and encourages lively debate and discussion.
You'll also enjoy the informal and friendly atmosphere, and of course you'll have the opportunity to socialise and exchange ideas with people who share your interest and enthusiasm for Art History and the visual arts.
Sessions are held at Cleveland College of Art & Design and are taught by a well-qualified tutor who uses high quality teaching materials including slides, digital images, video and music.
Course entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course but as someone who is interested in Art History and the visual arts, you'll find this course exciting, stimulating and enriching.
Perhaps you already have a History of Art qualification, or you have previously taken courses elsewhere. You may have never studied Art History before but you're keen to find out more about a particular period, style or artist.
You will need a good level of reading and writing in English and be able to understand written and spoken instructions. You will need to read and understand handouts and on screen information and be able to work independently.
What will I learn?
The tutor will explore how artistic approaches and styles have developed over time. Art works from different artists and periods will be considered. The course is liberally illustrated with sample artworks which illustrate styles and periods. Styles of art also varies from country to country and samples will be chosen from all over the world to demonstrate this. The course begins with the influences of the Renaissance in Northern Europe. A full programme of course content will be provided. How different media affect the appearance of the artwork will be considered and illustrated along with their advantages and disadvantages.
The following artists and sculptors work will be included (and lots more besides):-
Constable, Turner, Van Gogh, Holbein, Durer, Pisarro, Michelangelo, Picasso, Henry Moore
Assessment and accreditation
Assessment will take place during the course as well as developing a portfolio of evidence. No exams are involved. OCN certificates at levels 2 and 3 can be achieved.

This course provides a sound foundation for those wishing to study art in higher education.
