Course Information: Local ArchaeologyAbout this courseTo introduce learners to the archaeological sites of the Middlesbrough area, the ways in which they were discovered and excavated and the artefacts found in them. Course entry requirementsNo prior knowledge required. The course is also open to people who may not be able to work on a site themselves.
You will need a good level of reading and writing in English and be able to understand written and spoken instructions. You will need to read and understand handouts and on screen information and be able to work independently. What will I learn?The position, nature and dating of important local sites.
The methods used to establish the presence of archaeology.
Excavation, recording, dating and preservation techniques.
Examine artefacts and site plans and discuss their significance.
Visit a site, excavation or museum. Assessment and accreditationThe course is non-accredited. assessment will be via learners written notes, oral answers, quizzes, discussions and a personal or group study. What should I bring?Pen and paper to the first class. A folder of file for course notes. What should I do next?Progress to a Local Archaeology or History Society. Volunteer at a dig. Take GCSE or other related qualification.
